Cultural Ambassadors Junior Resources

Educational and instructional materials are designed for teachers, librarians, parents and caregivers of children in grades Pre K-5 to teach and celebrate Puerto Rican history and culture. These free multimedia materials include author talks, teaching guides, maps, timelines, short videos, and documentaries.

When Julia Danced Bomba - Cuando Julia bailaba bomba

Introducing children—and adults!—to the Afro-Latino tradition of bomba music and dancing, author and educator Raquel M. Ortiz shares another story for children ages 5-9 about her rich Puerto Rican heritage. With lively illustrations by Flor de Vita that aptly express Julia’s frustration, fear and joy, this book will help children understand that practicing—whether dance steps, dribbling a ball or playing a musical instrument—yields results!

Sofi and the Magic, Musical Mural - Sofi y el mágico mural musical

When Sofi walks through her barrio to the localstore, she always passes a huge mural with images from Puerto Rico: musicians, dancers, tropical flowers and—her least favorite—a vejigante, a character from carnival that wears a scary mask.

Cucarachita Martina's Musical Adventure

Cucaracita Martina’s Musical Adventure is an 18-minute animated film inspired by Pura Belpré’ and her first picture book, Pérez and Martina: A Portorican Tale. It’s the tale of beautiful Martina who is sought after by sneaky Señor Gato, whiney Señor Pato, proud Señor Gallo, sad Señor Grillo, chatty Señor Sapo, and gallant Señor Pérez, the mouse. Find out who Martina will pick to perform with her in the talent show for the fiestas patronales.
