Puerto Rico, Puerto Ricans PRSA will bring together stateside Puerto Rican academics to examine and gain a broader understanding of the economic, fiscal, political and unfolding humanitarian crises in Puerto Rico. Papers will be considered for publication in a special issue of the Centro Journal on Critical Perspectives on Puerto Rico. This national conference, a collaboration between the Puerto Rican Studies Association and the Center for Puerto Rican Studies, is part of a series of conferences devoted to broaden our understanding of the economic crisis in Puerto Rico. One year after the enactment of PROMESA, this conference will be a safe space for the discussion of policy issues regarding Puerto Rico's economic, fiscal, political and humanitarian crises from the perspective of stateside Puerto Ricans scholars and other stakeholders.
The Puerto Rican diaspora has engaged in a solidarity movement that is unprecedented in our history, and Centro and the PRSA are playing a unique convening, informational, and documentarian role in the process. The conference will provide a unique forum for discussion and education for a broad group of stakeholders. Papers presented at the conference will be considered for publication by the Centro Journal and will serve as a guide toward a deeper understanding of the concerns and interests of the Puerto Rican people and other stakeholders.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Humanitarian crisis: poverty and social safety net, socioeconomic conditions, migration
- Economic crisis: Jones Act of 1920, revitalization initiatives
- Fiscal crisis: debt restructuring, PROMESA, fiscal reforms
- Political crisis: plebiscites, elections, status, U.S. congress and Puerto Rico, diaspora engagement
