Puerto Rican Experience Through Oral History
The most important items reposing in the Centro Archives are not just our documents, photos and memorabilia. Adding to these dearest treasures is Memorias, the growing collection of oral histories, the personal stories of community pioneers and other accomplished Puerto Ricans in our remarkable, ever-growing oral history collection You can learn more about this outstanding collection at the forum In Their Own Voices introducing the Memorias project, when its coordinator Shakti Castro, researcher Harry Franqui-Rivera and library archivist Cynthia Tobar present short clips from oral history interviews and provide the context of this project.
The event also will include a moderated discussion on the collection and production process, some preliminary findings, and a Q & A session. “Recording and preserving the oral histories of members of our community is so important because it gives a greater context to our history in this country, said Centro’s oral historian Shakti Castro. “Through oral history we are able to understand the stories of those who were a part of the Great Migration and those who followed." The oral histories in our Memorias collection, each unique, each irreplaceable, are records for researchers, academics and every member of our community interested in preserving and understanding the narrative of our vibrant history in the U.S. To RSVP for this event contact centro.events@hunter.cuny.edu.
