
Between the years 2000 and 2014 the Puerto Rican population in the United States grew from about 3.4 million to almost 5.3 million. According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, Puerto Ricans accounted for 1.6% of the U.S. population in 2014, up from 1.2% in 2000. Despite Puerto Ricans’ proportional growth among the total U.S. population, their proportional representation among all Hispanics or Latinos remained fairly stable, dropping marginally from 9.6% in 2000 to 9.5% in 2014. Approximately 1.8 million more Puerto Ricans resided in the U.S than in Puerto Rico
