Ricardo Muñiz

I started as a teacher working with dropouts. I went on to create my own programs including The East River School, The PM Program, and the Alternative to Suspension Program for District 8. I ended my public school career in 2004 as a bilingual social worker at IS 174. After two attempts at doctorates, I returned to my original love: art.

My art is focused on finding the beauty in oppressed communities. I consider it my duty to try to help my people in any way I can--even if it's only by telling our stories through art. My work now is about finding the unheard voices in the community—be it through photography, body painting, paper sculptures, writing or just simple storytelling
